AcouBatt
Formation & Quality Control

Unlock the battery black box.

Turn real-time acoustic intelligence into shorter formation protocols, earlier defect detection and more consistent cell quality.

Three jobs, one sensor

What Exactly We Monitor.

SEI Formation

Monitor acoustic activity during SEI formation to identify passivation completion, detect abnormal behaviour and optimise formation protocols.

Gas Evolution

Detect the timing and intensity of gas evolution during formation, helping compare electrolyte formulations and flag abnormal or excessive activity.

Micro-Cracking & Delamination

Identify acoustic signatures associated with particle cracking, electrode degradation and layer delamination as they develop during formation and early cycling.

Formation and QC

What The Data Tells You.

By synchronising acoustic activity with voltage, current and other process data, AcouBatt helps identify when key formation processes begin, evolve and reach completion. This allows formation protocols to be optimised around real cell behaviour rather than fixed, conservative time buffers. At the same time, real-time monitoring reveals cell-to-cell variation and flags process deviations such as abnormal gas evolution, plating-related activity and mechanical degradation before affected cells move further downstream.

  • Shorten formation protocols and reduce energy consumption.
  • Detect process deviations and intercept defects earlier.
  • Feed production insights back into protocol development.

4 simple steps

How It Looks In Practice.

Calibrate

Record acoustic data under your existing formation protocol to calibrate the model for your cell design, equipment and process.

Optimise

Combine acoustic and electrochemical insights to identify opportunities to shorten protocols and reduce energy consumption.

Benchmark

Establish a reference profile for normal formation behaviour and acceptable cell-to-cell variation.

Feedback

Track every cell against the established benchmark, flag process deviations and continuously improve future protocols.

The underlying sensing principle applies across battery chemistries. AcouBatt is calibrated for each cell design, formation protocol and testing environment.

AcouBatt can be adapted to pouch, cylindrical and prismatic cells, with the sensor configuration tailored to the cell format and equipment.

Our research has demonstrated the potential to shorten formation protocols by up to 30% while maintaining cell performance. The achievable reduction depends on the cell design, chemistry and existing formation protocol.

Our models are validated using labelled battery experiments and complementary electrochemical and physical measurements. Performance is then calibrated for each cell design, environment and target application.
